    Responsibilities

    The Physician Assistant Department is dedicated to providing quality, professional, cost-effective health care to all patients at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.

     

    At Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, physician assistants(PA) provide medical services under the supervision of a licensed physician fulfilling a broad range of medical services that would otherwise be provided by the physician. The PA shall be permitted to provide any service within his/her scope of training/skills delegated by the supervising physician or the patient's physician that has been approved by the Credentials Committee and is within the scope of practice of the physician. A PA employed as a surgical PA provides such services under the supervision of the patient’s surgeon and the Director of Surgery. The primary role of the surgical PA is to assist in surgery (including first-assisting), and when not in surgery to then assist the surgeons with surgical patient care in any other area of the hospital, including, but not limited to, the floors, the Emergency Department, the ICUs, the Labor and Delivery Room, and the Post Anesthesia Recovery area. A surgical PA also participates as a member of the Trauma Team, including taking on-call responsibilities.

     

    Qualifications

        Graduate of a PA program accredited by The Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, or its predecessor.

        Current NCCPA certification

        Current New York State license as Registered Physician Assistant

        Current ACLS documentation

        Requires the psychomotor skills to perform assessments/reassessments, procedures, and to assist in surgery.

        The interpersonal and customer service skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients, their family members, physicians, nursing, and other Hospital personnel when exchanging patient status, care, and treatment information.

        Requires the ability to recognize and address the psychosocial needs of patients and their families, and the ability and skills necessary to attend to special needs relating to the patient's age and diagnosis.

        The ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail for approximately seventy-five percent of work time for responsibilities such as providing patient care, operating and monitoring equipment, and recording data in patient charts.

        The ability to walk and stand for approximately seventy-five percent of work time, and to lift, pull, push, and/or carry items such as equipment weighing up to twenty pounds or patients on stretchers for approximately twenty-five percent of work time when providing patient care.

        Prior first-assisting experience in general surgery including major trauma

        Prior experience assisting with managing surgical patients in the ICU setting

        Prior experience performing procedures such as insertion/removal of CVLs and chest tubes
